ANN CAROLINE NICHOLS SHORTT, 70 years of age of Vansant, Virginia, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2009 at her home surrounded by her loving family and friends following an extended illness.  Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of Ruth Montgomery Nichols of Mavisdale, Va and the late Claude Nichols.  She was a member of the Vansant Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, a graduate of Garden High School – class of 1958 and was a former employee of the Buchanan County School System having worked as a Teachers Aide at Vansant Elementary School. She was a loving mother, wife and grandmother.   She was co-owner of Shortt and Son Paving Company Inc.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Pollard Shortt on May 21, 2004

She is survived by one son: John Pollard Shortt II and his wife Deanna, Vansant, VA, Two Sisters: Peggy McConnaughey, Lompac, CA, Alice and husband Richard Porter, Mavisdale, VA, Three Brothers: Cecil and wife Dinah Nichols, Grundy, VA, Bob and wife Bonnie Nichols, Abingdon, VA, Bill and wife Wanda Nichols, Abingdon, VA, Two Grandchildren: Jordan Ramey, Grundy, VA, Emilee Brooke Shortt, Grundy, VA

She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services for ANN CAROLINE NICHOLS SHORTT will be conducted Monday, June 15, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. at the Grundy Funeral Home with Pastor Phyllis Cantor and Rex Spencer officiating with burial to follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, VA.

Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral home at 12:00 noon with the funeral at 1:00 p.m.

Active Pallbearers will be Jordan Ramey, Matt Cook, Chris Shortt, Dave Shortt, Mark Fletcher, Tom Lowry, Charles Lunsford, Willie Breeding and Leslie Stacy.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Members of Vansant Presbyterian Church, Garden High School Class of 1958, Mary Yates, Barbara McCallister and Dr. Clint Sutherland.
