BUFORD KADLE (DUKE) HACKNEY, 68 years old of the Home Creek section of Grundy, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, October 29, 2009 at the Holsten Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN following a brief illness.  Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Lundy and Hettie Deel Hackney.  He was a member of the New Zion Freewill Baptist Church, a member of the United States Army having served during the Vietnam Conflict.  He was a disabled Federal Mine Inspector and a former deputy sheriff for the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Department.  He was a member of the John Ratliff Post #164 of the American Legion and the Childs Gentry Post #7360 of the VFW. 

Mr. Hackney is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Phyllis A. Justus Hackney, Two daughters:   Teresa Ann and her husband Cecil McClanahan, Grundy, VA, Sybilla Diana and her husband John Benfield, Belfast, VA, Three sons: James Buford Hackney, North Tazewell, VA, Brian and his wife Traci Hackney, North Tazewell, VA, Thomas and his wife Debora Hackney, North Tazewell, VA, Three Brothers: Emsy and his wife Carolyn Hackney, Cheyenne, WY, Gene and his wife Patty Hackney, Maysfield, OH, C. A. Hackney, Grundy, VA

He is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 2 Great-Grandchildren.

Mr. Hackney was preceded in death by four brothers; Verlin, Travis, Kennard and Paul Hackney and two sisters; Auredeth Dotson and Mary Waters. 

Funeral services for BUFORD KADLE (DUKE) HACKNEY will be conducted Saturday, November 1, 2008 at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Jeff Stacy, E. C. Honaker and Doug Elkins officiating with entombment to follow in the Mountain Rest Mausoleum at the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, VA.

Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home after 6:00 P.M. Friday with services at 7:00 P.M.

Active Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by members of the John Ratliff Post #164 of the American Legion.
