HURSEL “JACK” CARROLL RIFFE,
82 years of age,
of Grundy, VA, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2009, at the Golden Age Retirement
Home, Claypool Hill, VA following an extended illness. Born in McDowell County,
he was a son of the late Lewis L. and Ida Pearl Lewis Riffe. He was preceded in
death by his wife Mildred Ann Looney Riffe, Dec. 31, 1998. He was a graduate of
Grundy High School, Emory and Henry College, and Milligan College, a member of
the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7360. He served in the
U. S. Navy in World War II serving as a Radioman Third Class V6 USNR SV, Naval
Supply Depot Navy #3149 on the USS YMS 138, he was awarded the Victory World War
II Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Area Medal. He was a member of the Ratliff
Chapel Church, Little Prater, VA. He was a retired Athletic Director and
teacher for Buchanan County Public Schools where he was employed for 41 years
and coached Football, Basketball, and Girl’s Softball.
Mr. Riffe is survived by:
1-Son: Timothy and wife Sandy Riffe, Grundy, VA; 3-Sisters:
Delores Childress, Grundy, VA, Marlene Ratliff, Big Stone Gap,
VA, Leona Ratliff, Grundy, VA; 1- Granddaughter: Vanessa Ann and husband Richie
Waddell, Watauga, TN . Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents
and wife Mr. Riffe was preceded in death by 1-brother: Charles Herman Riffe,
his father and mother-in-law Donald and Mona McClanahan Looney,
3-brothers-in-law: Cline Childress, Sparell Ratliff, Jr, and Percy Ratliff.
Funeral services for
HURSEL “JACK” CARROLL RIFFE will be conducted Saturday, June 27, 2009, at
1:00 P.M at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Rick Ellis and Jason
Ratliff officiating with burial to follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park,
Big Rock, VA.
Full Military Rites will be
conducted at the cemetery by Childs Gentry Post #7360 of the Veterans of Foreign
War, Grundy, VA.
Friends may call at the
Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Friday afternoon at 6:00 P.M. with Services at 7:00
P.M.
Active Pallbearers will be
