MARY ELLEN MATNEY ASHBY GRIFFEY, 83 years of age of the Stiltner’s Creek Section of Grundy, VA, passed away Thursday, October 15, 2009 at the Pikeville Medical Center, Pikeville, KY, following an extended illness. Born in McDowell County, WV, she was the daughter of the late Kennis and Mary Magaline Coleman Matney. She was a resident of Buchanan County most of her life and was a member of Grundy Bible Church. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and was a wonderful homemaker.

Mrs. Griffey was preceded in death by her first husband: James Chester Ashby, January 16, 1971 and her second husband: Roscoe Griffey, July 15, 1994

She is survived by 2-Daughters: Jean and husband Ronnie Stiltner, Grundy, VA, Carolyn and husband John Estep, Hurley, VA, 3-Sons: Don and wife Brenda Ashby, Grundy, VA, Darrel and wife Linda Ashby, Lebanon, VA, Chet Jr. and wife Debbie Ashby, Panther, WV, 5-Granddaughters: Michelle and husband Randy Cole, Grundy, VA, Destiny Ashby, Grundy, VA, Andrea and husband Garret Gunnells, Iaeger, WV, Sophia and husband Tracey Wise, Bristol, VA, Paige Stiltner, North Carolina, 6-Grandsons: Donald and wife Jill Ashby, Pikeville, KY, Nick Ashby, Pikeville, KY, Johnny and wife Drema Estep, Bristol, VA, Devin Ashby, Lebanon, VA, James and wife Crystal Ashby, Panther, WV, Brian Ashby, Panther, WV, 2-Step-Grandsons: Rodney and wife Tina Stiltner, Grundy, VA, Dee and wife Allison Stiltner, Grundy, VA

Also, survived by 4-Sisters: Nellie, Pricey, Brenda and Jeannie; 7-Brothers: James, Rilley, Bobby, Fred, Tommy, Johnney and Tony Matney; 2-Special-Sisters-in-Law: Ada and husband Charlie Hurley and Anna Lou Ashby; 14-Great-Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by 1-Daughter: Phyllis Ashby, Step-Mother: Lou Jane Matney, 1-Sister: Claude Ashby; 1-Brother: Thurman Matney and 1-Grandson: Mark Ashby.

Funeral Services for MARY ELLEN MATNEY ASHBY GRIFFEY will be conducted Sunday, October 18, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Dean Powers officiating with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, VA.

Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Friday evening at 6:30 P.M. with services Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:00 P.M.

Active Pallbearers will be Grandsons: Donald Ashby, Nick Ashby, Randy Cole, Johnny Estep, Devin Ashby, James Ashby, Brian Ashby, Tracey Wise, Garret Gunnells, Rodney Stiltner and Dee Stiltner.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Ronnie Stiltner, John Estep, Charlie Hurley, the Staff of Mountain View Nursing Home and the Men of the Grundy Bible Church.
