NELL SMITH SUTHERLAND,
93 years of age
of Grundy, VA, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, July 26, 2009 at her home
following an extended illness. Born in Pike County, KY, she was the daughter of
the late Frank and Myrtle Davis Smith. She was a resident of Buchanan County
most of her life and was a member of Grundy Church of Christ for over 50-years
and a member of the ladies Sunday school class. Nell was an active member of the
Grundy Church of Christ Butterfly Organization and worked with the American
Cancer Society. She was a School Teacher in Buchanan and Pike Counties and
served as Bookkeeper for the Sutherland Clinic. She was a devoted, loving wife,
and without her help and encouragement, her husband, Dr. J.P. Sutherland Sr.,
would not have been able to serve the people he loved so dearly. She was a
dedicated mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who gave to her family
selflessly.
Mrs. Sutherland was preceded
in death by her husband: Dr. Joshua P. Sutherland, February 16, 2000.
She is survived by

Cynthiana, KY, 3-Sons: Dr. J.P. Jr. and wife Kathie Sutherland, Abingdon, VA,
Dr. Franklin Joel Sutherland, Grundy, VA, Dr. William “Bill” Sutherland,
Williamsburg, VA, 1-Sister: Etta Marie Swinney, Ashland, KY, 1-Brother: Jack
Smith, Richmond, VA, 2-Sisters-in-Law: Joyce Smith, Haysi, VA, Blanche
Arrington, Dade City, FL
She was preceded in death by
1-Sister: Sarah Ward, 1-Brother: Joe Smith and Special Care Giver: Tiny Rife.
Also, survived by
9-Grandchildren: Eric and wife Liliya Sutherland, Josh Sutherland, Jason and
wife Julie Biddle, Chad and wife Micki Biddle, Ashley and husband Chris Earle,
Adam Sutherland, Jamie Barnes, Amy and husband Tyler Yaugo and Douglas Murphy;
7-Great-Grandchildren: Dalton Barnes, Emma Yaugo, Anna Paige Yaugo, Lincoln
Earle, Blaine Biddle, Anna Marie Biddle and Kacee Biddle; and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral Services for NELL
SMITH SUTHERLAND will be conducted Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. at
the Grundy Church of Christ with Evgs. Dennis Wimmer, Tom Cooper and Jim Hill
officiating with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock,
VA.
Friends may call at the
Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Monday evening at 6:00 P.M. with services at 7:00
P.M.
The body of Mrs. Sutherland
will be moved to the Grundy Church of Christ Tuesday morning at 11:00 A.M. to
await the Funeral hour at 1:00 P.M.
Active Pallbearers will be
Grandsons and David Delaney.
Honorary Pallbearers will be
Men of the Grundy Church of Christ and Clinton Looney.
