ROSCOE ELSWICK, 95 years of age of Big Rock, VA, passed away Monday, November 10, 2008 at his home. Born February 9, 1913, in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Anderson and Clementine Ramey Elswick.

He was a commissioned Kentucky Colonel, an avid carpenter, tape maker and a distinguished 50-year member of District No. 28 of the United Mine Workers of America. He was a former employee of Buchanan County Coal Corporation and worked at #2 Tipple at Big Rock, VA, until he was disabled by blindness. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and was of the Christian Faith. Mr. Elswick was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife: Goldie (Mullins) Elswick; 5-Sisters: Lydia McGlothlin, Hester Giles, Florence Ratliff, Cora Williams and Callie Belcher; 3-Brothers: Gordon, Ira and James Elswick and his infant twin brother: Woodrow Elswick; 1-Son-in-Law: James Taylor; 1-Grandson: Chris Taylor and 1-Great-Grandchild.

He is survived by his wife: Mary Alice Price Elswick, Big Rock, VA., 3-Daughters:   Emogene Taylor, Feds Creek, KY, Avon and husband Vernie Keen, Spotsylvania, VA, Glenda and husband Darrell Hughes, Kingsport, TN, 4-Sons: Hubert and wife Sarah Elswick, Big Rock, VA, Roscoe Jr. and wife Karol Elswick, Abingdon, VA, Paul and wife Janne Elswick, Big Rock, VA, Danny and wife Darlene Elswick, Big Rock, VA, 2-Step-Daughters: Ernestine and husband Larry Looney, Grundy, VA, Dorothy Sloan, Atlanta, GA

Also, survived by 24-Grandchildren, 38-Great-Grandchildren, 3-Great-Great-Grandchildren, and several Nieces and Nephews.  

Funeral Services for ROSCOE ELSWICK will be conducted Thursday, November 13, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at the New Hope Christian Church, on Slate Creek near Grundy, VA, with Evg. William L. Neeley officiating with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, VA.

Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Tuesday evening at 6:00 P.M. with services Wednesday evening at 7:00 P.M.

Mr. Elswick will be taken to the New Hope Christian Church, on Slate Creek near Grundy, VA, Thursday morning at 9:00 A.M. to await the funeral hour at 11:00 A.M.

Active Pallbearers will be Grandsons and Great-Grandsons.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Nieces and Nephews.
