
TONY COMPTON,
62 years of age of the Slate
Creek section of Grundy, VA, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2009 at his home
following a short illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late
Hosea and Polly Jane Deel Compton. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County
and was of the Protestant Faith. He was a graduate of Grundy High School Class
of 1965, attended Pikeville College and was a member of the American Legion and
Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Compton served in the
United States Army as a Staff Sergeant during the Vietnam Conflict. He was
trained in CBR Training, Military Justice, Geneva Convention, ATP 21-114 and
Code of Conduct. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal; Combat
Infantryman Badge; Two Purple Hearts, Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars,
Army Commendation Medal with/ V Device; Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device,
Bronze Star Medal with V Device and 4 Oak Leaf Clusters.
He was owner/operator of
Bryan’s Stop and Shop on Slate Creek. He was a member of the National Rifle
Association, the National Wild Turkey Federation and the National Federation of
Independent Businesses, He was an avid Outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and
fishing.
Mr. Compton was preceded in
death by his wife: Patricia Ann Deel Compton.
He is survived by 1-Son:
Anthony Bryan and wife Addie O’Quinn Compton, King, NC, 2-Sisters: Van Dora and
husband Joseph Howell, Vansant, VA, Ona Edith Compton, Vansant, VA, 3-Brothers:
Ronnie Compton, Vansant, VA, Lonnie and wife Geneva Compton, Vansant, VA, Claude
Compton, Haysi, VA, 1-Grandson: Patrick Lee O’Quinn-Compton, King, NC
He was preceded in death by
1-Brother: Clarence Compton.
Funeral Services for TONY
COMPTON will be conducted Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at the
Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evg. Dennis Wimmer and Evg. Mike Rife
officiating with burial to follow in the James Deel Cemetery on Rakes Ridge near
Birchleaf, VA.
Friends may call at the
Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Tuesday evening at 6:00 P.M. with services at 7:00
P.M.
Active Pallbearers will be
Phillip Compton, Ryan Compton, Craig Howell, Freddie Harbin, Dean Seitz, Edd
Caudill and Jim Deel.
Honorary Pallbearers will be
Employees of Bryan’s Stop & Shop.
The family suggests that
expressions of sympathy be made in the form of donations to the Heavenly
Helper’s Relay for Life Cancer Team, P.O. Box 1016, Grundy, VA 24614.
Full Military Rites will be
conducted at the Cemetery by members of the Childs Gentry Post #7360 of the
Veterans of Foreign War.
